An Introduction To The Retina Display On The iPhone 4S

On October the 15th we will see the release of the highly anticipated new smartphone from Apple, the iPhone 4S. One of the stand out features on this new model is the phones superb screen which offers a higher pixels per inch rating then any of its rivals. Here we take a closer look at the superb display offered on this model.

Apple have named the screen that is used on this model the Retina display. They have opted for this name as the screen is capable of displaying a pixel density beyond what the human eye can detect. Apple have achieved this by developing a pixel that measures a tiny 78 micro metres across. This means that the screen offers 326 pixel per square inch which makes images and text look crystal clear even when enlarged. The overall resolution of the display is the best currently offered on any smartphone at 960 x 640 and this is together with an impressive contrast ratio of 800:1 which means the screen offers an abundance of colours. At 3.5 inches the display on the 4S is not the largest that you will find but remains an adequate size for all manner of every day tasks from composing e mails to watching movies. An appealing aspect of this display are the super viewing angles that are offered. This is traditionally an area where mobile displays suffer but thanks to the implementation of IPS technology the viewing angles are superb and the screen also looks great in sunlight.

The iPhone 4S ensures that you always get the best possible picture quality thanks to a light sensor being fitted on the handset. This sensor detects the current light levels around you and then adjusts the screen accordingly to the appropriate brightness level. Not only does this mean your display always looks perfect but it also helps save battery life by reducing brightness when it is not needed. In addition to the light sensor the phone also incorporates a proximity sensor that switches the screen off when the phone is held against your ear. Not only does this mean that you further save on your battery but it also prevents any buttons being accidentally pressed during the call. Most touchscreens suffer a problem with fingerprints but the iPhone 4S display is treated with a special finish that makes it fairly resistant to fingerprints. Together with the toughened glass that the screen uses it means that your iPhone will look in top condition for longer, a point that is vitally important in this modern age of very long mobile contract lengths.
